From ICU to Innovation: Why I Created BoardWise

When I became a nurse, I swore an oath to advocate for patients — even when it wasn't easy.

What I didn't expect was that someday, I'd need to fight just as hard to defend my own license.

I'm a critical care nurse, trained at Duke University, and a summa cum laude graduate who spent years in the ICU — including during the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like so many of my colleagues, I worked through unimaginable trauma, burnout, and chaos. We showed up every day to save lives, even when the system around us crumbled.

But I was surprised to one day receive a board complaint.

The Process Nearly Broke Me

Navigating the disciplinary process was nothing short of hellish.

There was no roadmap. No one to call. Very little legal aid. Just vague letters, strict deadlines, and the looming threat of career destruction.

As a nurse, I was trained in ethics, safety, and healing — but not in regulatory law. I did not know how to respond. I did not know what language to use. And like many others, I worried about affording an attorney.

I was not alone. I began researching and realized:
